Gesneriads

A large family including many tropical plants such as Aeschynanthus (”Lipstick Plant”), Columnea, Nematanthus (”Goldfish” or “Guppy Plant”), Saintpaulia (”African Violet”). Many of them can be grown in an east window or under fluorescent lights with night temperatures in the 60s.

Succulents

A general term for plants from many different plant families that are adapted to drier conditions for at least part of the year. To mention only a few, Euphorbias grow under conditions similar to cacti and often have similar shapes. They range in size from miniatures to those that are tree-like in the wild. Another large group of succulents are in the lily family. Haworthias, Gasterias and smaller growing Aloes can make good windowsill plants. For those who can offer sunny and dry, the Lithops (”Living Stones”) and other mesembryanthemums are fascinating examples of how plants adapt to very dry conditions in the wild. And then there are Sedums (some of which are hardy outside), Echeverias, Crassulas.

All cacti and succulents are grown from seed or propagated from cuttings. Send a SASE for Lists of larger cacti and succulents and of plants in very limited quantities, such as Euphorbias and caudiciforms. Plants are shipped bare-root, generally from 2 1/2 in. pots. Remove any damaged roots before potting. Use a sterilized sandy soil-mixture, slightly moistened. Pot firmly and keep out of strong light for about a week. Water lightly as plants need it. Lithops should be dry.

Cacti

Cacti are a large group of succulent plants. Included are the “Jungle Cacti” like Rhipsalis, Epiphyllums and related plants that enjoy filtered light and never totally drying out. Other cacti enjoy bright sun, with moderate watering in summer along with a cool, dry winter rest.

Orchids

Orchids, at least the ones I grow are tropical — night temperatures in winter in the lower 60s. Most varieties are in too limited quantity to list, but include paphiopedilums, oncidium alliance hybrids, cattleya hybrids, and phalaenopsis. With the increase in fuel costs and my own time and energy limitations, it no longer makes sense to try to raise them from seedlings.
